Case Studies

Patient One

A five month old pediatric patient was diagnosed with a brain abscess at approximately 3 months of age. The physician wanted to treat the patients increased pain with a sublingual morphine. Commercially available Morphine solutions would have been impossible to measure the correct amount for a such a small dose. The pharmacists were able to compound a diluted Morphine concentration of 1mg/ml that was successfully used to treat the patient

Patient Two

A 14 year old female canine was diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism or also known as Cushings disease. One of the drugs used to treat this disease in canines, is Mitotaine and is only commercially available in 500mg tablet form. Based on periodic blood work the dosage varies from month to month. For this particular canine we were able to compound capsules in dosages ranging from 156mg to 310mg. The owner wanted it in capsules to place in the pet’s food.

Patient Three

A 47 Year old male with squamous cell cancer of the skin with metastisis to the bone. The patient suffered from an infected cutaneous and soft tissue lesion on the thigh area with a foul odor. A compounded cream of Gentamicin/Clindamycin /Polymyxin B Sulfate 0.1%/0.1%/0.1% was prepared to be applied as directed at each dressing change directly to the wound.

Patient Four

A 3 year old mare horse was diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome. One of the treatment options for this particular syndrome in equine is Pergolide Mesylate, which is no longer available commercially and has to be compounded. We were able to compound the Pergolide Mesylate into an oral suspension for the horse in a flavor that is very favorable to the pallet of the horse.

Patient Five

An 83 year old male with wounds to bilateral buttocks similar to debucitus ulcers. The wounds were secondary to the patients ESPM, Dm, which lead to poor circulation and his morbid obesity and immobility leading to skin breakdown. The wounds were treated with 2 compounded topical formulations. A 0.2% Nifedipine PLO gel was applied to the area around the wound to increase peripheral circulation. Another formulation of Misoprostol/Metraonidazole/Phenytoin/

Patient Six

A sixteen year old female patient who has suffered severe brain damage as a result of SBS (shaken baby syndrome). The patient has been on the commercially available Aquachloral Suppositories. This particular product is no longer available. Other medications are not affective for the patient. We were able to obtain Chloral Hydrate Powder and are now compounding the patient suppositories that meet the caregivers satisfaction.
